A True Canadian Winter

My childhood memories consist of skating at all hours on the backyard rink that my dad made for us every winter growing up...I remember the feel of my skates cutting into the ice, the sound of the swooshing around the ice, calling out for my friends to come join me, breathing out and creating puffs of air, the red cheeks, the tingling toes cause they're about to freeze off!  shovelling the snow off after a storm ....countless memories.  This year, Mr. M was determined to make a rink for the kids...little did I know the planning that goes into constructing one of those things!  The plywood, the screws, the anchors, the tarp!  oh the tarp.  It has to be the right dimension - not too small, but big enough to cover the surface and then some...the timing of starting the rink, the lighting of the rink so you can skate after dark, the rink rake - yep, the rink rake - which is used to "flood" the rink and ensure consistent application (that's a direct quote from Mr. M).  Hours and hours and hours of prep...but man does he love it!  As do we!

Here are a couple of pics of the final result :)

The final result

First day the rink is up and running!  Notice no skates, only the kids are allowed skates at this point.

The next Gretzky about to hammer it home!
